Robbers Raid Residence of Youth Corps Members

Armed robbers on Monday night attacked some members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State. The ugly incident occurred at the corps members’ residence at Oluwo in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the State. Many of them sustained various injuries in the course of the bandits’ strike, while property such as money, laptops and phones were equally carted away. Some of the corps members who had participated as adhoc staff during the general elections lost their allowances to the bandits.

It was gathered that the building known as the Nigerian Christian Corpers Fellowship (NCCF) lodge accommodates about 40 youth corps members.
Following the incident, many of the victims yesterday trooped out into the streets in Abeokuta, the state capital to register their protest, accusing the police of not promptly rescuing them in the hands of the night marauders.

Corps members protest
The victims, who did not want their names in print, lamented to journalists that they would not have lost their property if the police had heeded to their distressed calls on time.

“When we called the police to come and rescue us during the attack, they did not come to our rescue on time, until after we had been robbed and wounded by the robbers,” said one of the victims.

A female victim while narrating her experience said she was almost raped by the robbers but for the intervention of the gang leader who stopped one of the robbers from the attempt.

Contacted on the incident, the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the incident but quickly exonerated his men from allegation of not responding on time.

“The NYSC could not point accusing finger to the police because if they had told the police, we would have given them some policemen,” the police image-maker said while urging corps members to always participate in community policing.

On the corps members’ reaction, Mr Adejobi said “the protest was uncalled for. The police in Adigbe did not know the lodge. Nobody knows the place as corpers’ lodge. The DPO could not locate the place. They should have let the police know the place and they would have been given special security.” He said.

Nigeria ranks as second most accident prone nation on Earth

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared that over 1.3million people are killed yearly from road traffic accidents, with Nigeria currently ranking 191 of the 192 countries in the world with unsafe roads.

Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Osita Chidoka, who disclosed this in Benin on Wednesday at the national launching of the United Nations Decade of Action on Road Safety, noted that over 80 per cent of the figure occurs in developing countries, with Africa accounting for the highest death rate.

According to him, with 162 death rates from road traffic accidents per 100,000 populations, Nigeria currently ranks 191 of the 192 countries in the world with unsafe roads, while over 50 million people sustain different degrees of injuries from such crashes.

Represented by Yakubu Atta, Zonal Coordinator of the FRSC, Chidoka noted that WHO has predicted that if nothing was done by countries to stem the tide, death by RTA would increase by 65 per cent by 2015/2020, overtaking malaria and tuberculosis.

N200 billion illegally added to budget

President Goodluck Jonathan has returned the national budget to the House of Representatives on account of N200 billion items that were illegally inserted into the document. The lawmakers described the incident as a potential source of scandal and so called for an executive session. However, after the 2hrs closed door executive session aimed at providing explanations as regards the source of the illegal addition, the lawmakers remained bewildered and unable to come up with any satisfactory answers. THISDAY however learnt from a source that the said N200billion was inserted into the budget after the House and the Senate had harmonised their separate versions of the Bill.

How does N200 billion jump into a budget from “nowhere”?

MTV and MTN Partner For Youth Empowerment Program

MTV Networks Africa and MTN have joined forces in a groundbreaking pan-African multimedia campaign designed to inspire African youth by connecting them with some of the world’s most influential people.

Young people all over the world are steadily taking interest in national and global affairs, and are increasingly becoming vocal on issues that affect them and the world they live in.

The Pan-African broadcaster and one of Africa’s biggest mobile operators are coming together to produce MTV Base Meets…with MTN, an 8-part youth empowerment initiative and TV series that creates a dialogue between young people and the political, business and cultural leaders who shape the world today.

The intimate documentary series will allow Africa’s young minds to ask influential, inspirational and sometimes controversial individuals vital and probing questions. Among the eminent people who will feature in the series are Liberian President Madame Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf (Africa’s first and only elected female head of state), Mr Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda and South African politician Mr Julius Malema (President of the ANC Youth League) and many African leaders or influencers who exercise a significant impact on the continent.

The captivating series will keep television viewers – young and old – on the edge of their seats. A diverse panel of young people representing different youth interests will be put together from across the African continent, with participants coming from Cameroon, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, South Africa and Uganda, among others.

Young, but well-informed, the panellists are articulate, engaging, provocative and opinionated on a range of intricate subjects – be it HIV/AIDS, global warming, education, poverty, corruption or entrepreneurship.

They are fearless and have attitude. Their no-holds-barred approach will make for exciting television viewing as they fire BIG questions to the influential people whose actions and opinions have a direct impact on their lives.

‘MTV base Meets…with MTN provides young people with the opportunity to engage directly with decision-makers and world leaders in order to address some of the key issues that are important to them. The initiative demonstrates our belief in the positive impact that the youth can have in shaping the future of the Continent.

We hope that MTV base Meets…with MTN will inspire young people across Africa to know that their voice matters and to help prepare them to take their own roles among the leaders of tomorrow’, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, MTV Networks Africa, Alex Okosi explains

And as a way of bringing about interaction between the captivating series and viewers at home, African youth will be encouraged to nominate influencers and submit their proposed questions for the programme via a dedicated MTV base Meets…with MTN website or via their mobile handset.
