Nigeria has dropped charges against former US Vice-President Dick Cheney over a 1990s bribery scandal, anti-corruption officials say.
The case focused on bribes paid by engineering firm KBR while it was a subsidiary of Halliburton, a firm headed by Mr Cheney at the time.
Nigerian officials said Halliburton agreed an out-of-court deal worth $250m (£160m). The firm has not commented.
Mr Cheney, who became vice-president in 2001, has always denied wrongdoing.
Femi Babafemi, of Nigeria's anti-corruption agency EFCC, said Halliburton had agreed to pay $250m "in lieu of prosecution".
He said $130m of the money would be repatriated from foreign bank accounts.
AFP news agency reported that the money in foreign accounts was part of the bribery scheme, but had been frozen before it had reached Nigeria.
Halliburton, which split from KBR in 2007, has not commented on the deal but has insisted it has done nothing wrong.
'No suggestion of impropriety'
According to earlier cases brought in the US, KBR executives paid more than $180m to Nigerian officials between 1994 and 2004 to secure about $6bn contracts for building a liquefied natural gas plant.
KBR was fined $402m by US authorities after pleaded guilty to conspiracy and corruption charges last year.
In a separate civil case in the US, Halliburton and KBR agreed to pay $177m in forfeited profits, without admitting any wrongdoing.
The EFCC had been conducting its own investigations and last week filed 16 charges.
Its indictment named Mr Cheney, who was boss of Halliburton before becoming vice-president to George W Bush in 2001, as well as the firm's chief executive David Lesar, and two other executives.
It also filed charges against Halliburton as a company and four associated businesses.
Last week Mr Cheney's lawyer, Terence O'Donnell, said US investigators had "found no suggestion of any impropriety by Dick Cheney in his role of CEO of Halliburton".
"Any suggestion of misconduct on his part, made now, years later, is entirely baseless," Mr O'Donnell said.

Akunyili Resigns, Joins APGA
SPECULATIONS were Wednesday laid to rest when President Goodluck Jonathan reluctantly accepted the resignation of the Minister of Information and Communication, Professor Dora Akunyili.
Consequently, the President has approved the appointment of Minister of State in the Ministry, Mr Labaran Maku, as the substantive Minister. The new senior Minister is now to function without a Minister of State.
Akunyili, in an emotion-laden last briefing after the Federal Executive Council, FEC, disclosed that she was quitting both the government and the ruling People Democratic Party, PDP, in order to achieve her age-long ambition to become a senator.
According to her, she intends to defect to the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, where she hopes to realise the political dream to emerge as a senator representing Anambra Central Senatoral District.
Briefing State House correspondents, shortly after the FEC which was presided over by President Jonathan, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Akunyili said her decision to resign and run for the position was borne out of her zeal to serve her people and Nigeria.
“Having reflected over the years about events in Nigeria and in particular my state, Anambra, I have come to the conclusion that it is indeed a defining moment in my life when I should make the sacrifice of leaving a comfortable place to go to a difficult terrain in order to build a better place for our children,” she said.
She stated further, “I have, therefore, decided to join my governor, Peter Obi, who is doing a great job in continuing to build Anambra State as an APGA senator. In this regard, I intend to pick the nomination form today (Wednesday) to run for the office of senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District in the national assembly”.
Akunyili had earlier in her valedictory address to the FEC, told colleagues “I am deeply grateful to you for giving me the opportunity to serve our dear country as minister of information and communications. I am equally grateful for the cooperation which you, the Vice President, who sees me as his own sister and my cabinet colleagues extended to me in the course of my duties, without which I would not have succeeded”.
She therefore sought the prayers and support of the council members in realising her political ambition.
“As I take this step, I solicit for your prayers and other forms of support. I am making this request because you are my people and my immediate constituency”, Akunyili said.
“Today is therefore a very emotional day for me in council. This is because I have been so closely bonded to most of you that my departure is like leaving a family. My heart is so heavy because in this council, I have found comfort and friendship,” she said.
Maku said President Jonathan reluctantly accepted the resignation of the former minister because of her quality service to the nation but added that since she was in quest of higher political, the president had not alternative than to allow her go.
While wishing Akunyili well in her political journey, the new minister noted that why they worked together as colleagues he enjoyed the best of relationship with the outgoing minister.

Elder statesman, Enahoro dies at 87: Gowon, Musa, Adebanjo, Olusola, NGE, others react
The rank of Nigeria’s founding fathers was further depleted this morning with the passing on of frontline nationalist and elder statesman, Chief Anthony Eromosele Enahoro.
Enahoro, 87, died in the early hours of today after a protracted illness.
He had been ill since late September when he fell into coma and had been a regular occupant of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, where he died.
The death of foremost journalist, anti-colonial and pro-democracy activist, threw the pro-democracy community into mourning Wednesday because of the octogenarian’s his evergreen usefulness, resourcefulness and relevance in nation-building.
Among those who paid glowing tributes to the mover of the first motion for Nigeria’s independence were Former Head of State, Gen.
Yakubu Gowon, Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, CNPP leader, Alh. Balarabe Musa, Afenifere stalwart, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Amb. Segun Olusola and Presidential aspirant of the Enahoro-led National Reformation Party, NRP, Dr Sam Nwanti. Others are Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) and the Edo State Government.
Meanwhile, eminent Nigerian citizens have started pouring in their tributes as they react to the late politician’s death.
In his own reaction, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, felt extremely sorry. “I am so sorry,” the former military leader, whose regime late Chief Enahoro served as Federal Commissioner for Information, regretted. He went on: “It is very sad indeed that we have to lose such a great man, who was very active in the struggle for actualising independent Nigeria. He was also a very active politician who did a lot for Nigeria.” General Gowon said.
He recalled Chief Enahoro’s role in the successes that his government recorded in those days. “I recall him as my Federal Commissioner for Information and through that position he occupied in my government, he ensured excellence and displayed understanding in bringing Nigeria to the fore.
“He had to survive a lot of prisons with Awolowo and when Awolowo joined me in holding Nigeria together, Anthony Enahoro always showed cooperation and made relentless effort at making Nigeria truly strong.
“I am very sad at his death. May his soul rest in peace.” Gowon said, adding that he was going to personally visit his Benin home to pay his respect to the fallen hero when he goes to attend the funeral of the late wife of Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, Clara, on Friday.
The Nigerian Guild of Editors has described late Pa Anthony Enahoro as a fighter for justice and a great journalist and Editor of repute.
In a release signed by Mr. Gbenga Adfaye, President, the guild said: “The Nigerian Guild of Editors has received the news of the death of Pa Anthony Enahoro today with gratitude to God for a life spent in the service of humanity. Although a star had indeed fallen, the testimonial of the life he lived does not warrant sorrows.
Pa Enahoro left a legacy of what is good for the people.
“Pa Enahoro was not just a great Nigerian and nationalist who moved the motion for Nigeria’s independence. He was first of all a great journalist and editor of repute – having edited The Comet, a member of the Zik’s chain of newspapers. He was a fighter for justice, a crusader for the the emancipation of the oppressed. He dared the British colonialists.
“He confronted the internal colonialists of the First Republic even when it meant he had to face treason trial. He confronted the evil of disintegration as Information Minister. And in the old age when he should have retired to a life of rest, he dared the bullets of the military dictators.
“As he breathed his last, he remained in the struggle to have a fair, just and equitable federation, where no tribe is oppressed. He was for all his life in the quest for a truly democratic Nigeria run on a Constitution owned by the people. He did all of this at great personal cost, digging in into the trenches of liberation war for Nigeria.
“Nigeria has indeed lost a great hero. Africa has lost a great son. And journalism has lost a great, glittering reference point. “May his soul rest in perfect peace and his dream for Nigeria come true.”

Nigerian is Poland's first black MP
Poland swears in Nigerian Godson as first black MP
John Abraham Godson, a Polish citizen born and raised in Nigeria, has been sworn in as the first black member of Poland's parliament.
Mr Godson had served as a councillor in the city of Lodz before taking up a parliamentary seat, vacated by a party colleague after local elections.
His entry into parliament has created a media stir in the mainly white country.
He came to Poland in the 1990s, opening an English-language school and working as a pastor in a Protestant church.
He has since married a Polish woman and the couple have four children.
Beaten up twice
A member of the centre-right Civic Platform party, he was appointed to the seat vacated by party colleague Hanna Zdanowskaafter after she became mayor of Lodz.
It is still quite rare to see black people even in the Polish capital Warsaw, Poland's most cosmopolitan city, the BBC's Adam Easton reports.
Racism is still a problem in Poland, where it is not uncommon for well-educated people to make racist jokes, our correspondent says.
Mr Godson was beaten up twice in the early 1990s but he says attitudes to black people in Poland are changing for the better, particularly since the country joined the EU six years ago.
Speaking earlier to Polish radio, Mr Godson said: "I am from Lodz, I will live here, I want to die here and I want to be buried here."

70million Nigerians without portable water – Minister
Minister of Water Resources, Chief Obadiah Ando, has said 70 million Nigerians live without access to potable water supply, noting that this represents 6% of world’s 1.1 billion people without safe drinking water.
The minister, who made this known at the ministerial press briefing in Abuja, Monady, said: “The current water supply service coverage in the country is 54 per cent or 80 million, while sanitation is 32 per cent or 54 million.
“About half of the Nigerian population, 70 million people, is without access to potable water supply, this represents 6 per cent of world’s 1.1 billion people without access to safe drinking water.”
He said there existed an impoundment of about 37 billion cubic meters of water in various dams and reservoirs across the country, adding that “this is capable of irrigating 1,000,000ha, but only 220,000ha has been developed under formal irrigation, out of which a meagre 82, 500hn is actually being irrigated.”
Ando explained that prior to the de-merger of the ministry from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, efforts had begun to reform the two ministries in order to achieve the goals set by the federal government.
“There has not been any let_up in our determination to see through the reforms.
In this connection, and in order to address some specific areas of the sector, three bills to create two agencies and one commission were forwarded to the National Assembly for enactment into law.
“The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency has been passed into law, while the Nigerian Integrated Water Resources Commission and the Gurara Dam Management Authority are awaiting passage,” he said.
He said the Nigerian Hydrological Service Agency was informed by the sustainable development of surface and groundwater resources, including construction of viable hydraulic structures, which is based on solid scientific foundation, anchored on hydro-meteorological data.
Ando said “the Ministry of Water Resources, in realization of the social and economic impacts of the communities affected by flood, was putting in place actions that will reduce impact of flooding and economic losses as well as the post-flooding health related like water borne diseases”.

Nigeria ex-governor James Ibori faces extradition to UK
Dubai's highest court has ruled that former Nigerian state governor James Ibori can be extradited to the UK to face corruption charges.
He is accused by Nigeria's anti-corruption agency of stealing more than $290m (£196m) of state funds while in office in the oil-rich Delta state.
British investigators say he channelled much of the money into banks in the UK.
Mr Ibori, who denies the charges, was detained in May after the intervention of the global police agency Interpol.
A month before he arrived in the Gulf emirate, a group of his supporters attacked police and prevented them from arresting him in his home town.
The Dubai Court of Cassation ruled that there were no grounds to block the extradition.
In 2007 a London court froze UK assets worth $35m allegedly belonging to him. His annual salary was less than $25,000.
He had already left the UK when his assets were seized.
Mr Ibori, who is a senior figure in Nigeria's ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP), was first arrested in Nigeria in December 2007.
Two years later, a court in Asaba cleared him of 170 charges of corruption, saying there was no clear evidence to convict, sparking the anger of Nigeria's anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Under Nigeria's federal system, state governors enjoy wide powers.
Those running oil-rich states have budgets larger than those of some African countries.
They enjoy immunity from prosecution while in power, but several have faced corruption charges since leaving office after the last election in 2007.

Nigeria's 'kidnap leader' killed
Nigeria army kills 'kidnap gang leader' in Abia state
The alleged leader of several notorious kidnapping gangs in Nigeria's Abia state has been killed, its army says.
Army spokesman Sagir Musa said a joint military task force had shot dead Obioma Nwankwo, also known as Osisikankwu, in a forest gun battle.
Nwankwo had been wanted for some months after an increase of kidnapping and robberies in the area.
Correspondents say people began celebrating in the main town of Aba when they heard news of his death.
Hostage-taking has become so bad in the south-eastern state that many middle-class Nigerians travel with armed escorts.
Hostages tend to be released unharmed after a ransom is paid.
A joint military task force was deployed to the state in September to restore order at the height of the violence when many businesses were forced to close and some children were abducted from their school bus.
The children were later released after a military operation.
According to Nigeria's Vanguard newspaper, Nwankwo had said in an interview last month that he had turned to militancy to protest against police abuses and extortion.
"We became militants because of the failure of government to live up to its responsibilities towards us. Many of us are graduates.
Some are university drop-outs, who could not continue for want of fund or sponsors. There are secondary school leavers without a future in school or jobs," he told the paper.
Abia state is on the fringes of the Niger Delta, where gunmen target oil workers for a ransom.
