Obasanjo denies rumour of death
FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo Friday reacted to his rumoured death saying that some people take delight in peddling rumors about his death and that his life was in the hands of God.
Obasanjo who spoke to newsmen at his Hill Top home in Abeokuta said “I think people take delight in speculation and rumoring. A friend of mine told me this morning; breaking to me the news of my death. And he was trying to confirm he said he had counted seven times that I have been rumored dead since the eve of my inauguration in 1999 as a democratically elected President of Nigeria till today.
“Those who indulge in this will not give up. And those who have superstitious belief that when there are rumors and speculations like this means longevity. Whether longevity or not, what I know is that until the Good Lord who has created me decides to say yes; I have reached my take off point to return to him, people may speculate, people may rumor and that will be their own handicap.
“My word to Nigerians is that wishes are not horses. People wish and God does not make it to happen. But I know that anybody created is bound to die sometimes. When my time comes, it will not be man that will decide; it is in the hands of God”.
Former President Obasanjo when asked for his New Year message said “we all Nigerians should be thankful for the year ending, 2010. I wish all Nigerians, young and old, male and female, every good fortune. The year, 2011 offers and promises to be a year of high expectations for all Nigerians. It is promised to be a divine year for the sustenance of our unity in democracy. I emphasize this; I prayed and I urged all Nigerians to pray for success in all our elections 2011 and also for Africa.
“We are not unmindful of what is happening in Africa and should pray to God, the author of peace to grant us the perfect in Nigeria and Africa”.

Babangida writes Nwodo, withdraws from PDP presidential race
*Says he supports the Northern consensus Atiku
FORMER Military President Friday wrote the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, withdrawing formally from the presidential race on the platform of the party.
The former Presidential aspirant before the emergence of ex-vice President Atiku Abubakar as the northern consensus candidate ahead of the party’s Presidential primaries, said in the letter he wrote to the Chairman that he was solidly behind the consensus arrangement.
In the letter he personally signed which was dated December 31st, 2010, and entitled “Withdrawal of Participation in the 2011 PDP Presidential Primary Election”, Babangida urged the National Working Committee, NWC of the party to approve the request.
The former Military President was joined by his supporters and members of his campaign office Friday when he personally submitted the letter to the national chairman of the PDP, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo at the Wadata Plaza, National Secretariat in Abuja.
Babangida in the letter said: “This letter submits for the kind consideration and approval of the National Working Committee of our great party – the Peoples Democratic Party of Nigeria (PDP), a request to withdraw from all the processes leading to and including the PDP Primary elections scheduled for 13th January, 2011.
“You will recall that in September, 2010, I had collected, completed and submitted the Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Guidelines set out by the party.
“As a consequence of the Consensus arrangement to which I voluntarily and willingly subscribed, I write to inform you of my decision to withdraw forthwith from all the processes leading to the selection and emergence of our Party’s Presidential flag bearer.
“Whilst extending my highest regards to your good selves and the Party, I wish to convey my gratitude to the Party for the opportunity given me to express my interest in the first place”.
Responding after receiving the letter, the PDP National Chairman, Dr. Nwodo who thanked him, however wished General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida well for his maturity and exhibiting good conduct.
It would be recalled that Babangida since the Mallam Adamu Ciroma-led Consensus Committee of the Northern Elders Political Forum declared Atiku as the preferred aspirant for the north, has been featuring in public function.
He has since the adoption of Atiku Abubakar fused his Campaign Organization into that of Atiku which is now tagged Amalgamated Campaign Organization.
Also recall that he was the Chairman at the recently held Stakeholders Conference which took place at ThisDay Dome in Abuja.
It was at the meeting that both Babangida and Atiku made statements President Goodluck Jonathan considered treasonable and warned that statements of such will no longer be tolerated by the government as any one found wanting will be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Terrorism, election drag Obama to Nigeria, other African countries
President Barack Obama of the United States is expected in Nigeria this year. The president is also billed to visit other African countries.
The reason for his visit has been linked to the spate of terrorism across the continent as well as the elections that will be held throughout Africa. Also, the US government officials are said to see increased political stability in Africa as good for long-term U.S. interests — a way to stem the growth of terrorism in East Africa and counterbalance China’s growing presence on the continent.
The U.S. was caught off guard during the 2009 climate summit in Copenhagen when several African countries voted with China and not the U.S., the administration official said. The official said the administration must persuade African nations that their interests are better served by aligning with the U.S.
A statement from White House obtained from agency reports says though the African countries Obama will visit are yet to be named, “the administration is monitoring more than 30 elections expected across Africa this year, including critical contests in Nigeria and Zimbabwe.”
John Campbell, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and a former U.S. ambassador to Nigeria, said the different elections give the Obama administration the opportunity to establish clear policies. Obama is reported to be interested in the referendum is Sudan, elections in Nigeria, Zimbabwe etc.
President Barack Obama of the United States is expected in Nigeria this year.
Expectations in Africa spiked after the election of an American president with a Kenyan father. But midway through his term, Obama’s agenda for Africa has taken a backseat to other foreign policy goals, such as winding down the Iraq war, fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan and resetting relations with Russia. Obama aides believe those issues are now on more solid footing, allowing the president to expand his international agenda. He will focus in Africa on good governance and supporting nations with strong democratic institutions.
The White House is reported to have said that Obama will travel to Africa again and the political calendar means the trip will almost certainly happen this year, before Obama has to spend more time on his re-election bid. No decision has been made on which countries Obama will visit, but deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said stops will reflect positive democratic models. The administration is monitoring more than 30 elections expected across Africa this year, including critical contests in Nigeria and Zimbabwe.
Last year, President Goodluck Jonathan was reported to have asked Obama to visit Nigeria during his inauguration this May.
White House officials believe the post-election standoff in Ivory Coast could be the model for Obama’s stepped-up engagement in Africa. The president tried to call incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo twice last month, from Air Force One as Obama returned from Afghanistan and then a week later.
Neither call reached Gbagbo; administration officials believe the Ivorian leader sought to avoid contact.
So Obama wrote Gbagbo a letter, offering him an international role if he stopped clinging to power and stepped down.
But Obama also made clear that the longer Gbagbo holds on, and the more complicit he becomes in violence across the country, the more limited his options become, said a senior administration official.
The official insisted on anonymity to speak about administration strategy.
Rhodes said the White House understands that U.S. involvement in African politics can be viewed as meddling. But he said Obama can speak to African leaders with a unique level of candour, reflecting his personal connection to Africa and that his father and other family members have been affected by the corruption that plagues many countries there.

Ikirun mayhem: How Police killed my sons over N20 – Bereaved father
FOR the family of Adesina of Oke-Afo, Ikirun, in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State, this is certainly not the best of times as the family is mourning the loss of two of its sons on the first day of the new year.
When Vanguard visited the home of Alhaji Saka Adesina, father of the deceased, the death of the two sons was the major discussion among the friends and family members. Adesina who was yet to come to terms with how a policeman could shoot his two sons to death over N20 expressed worry on the unfortunate incidence.
The business man who is the chief executive officer of Adesina Nigeria Enterprises said he sent the deceased on an errand before the police officer cut short their lives. He said: “The two boys were faithful, obedient and promising children who loved me and their mothers. I could not just believe that they would leave us so soon. They died at a time we least expected courtesy of police brutality and wickedness. It’s unfortunate that their death made me a popular person because of the circumstances that surrounded it.”
Adesina who was almost moved to tears while fielding questions from our correspondent noted: “It’s a sad thing for a parent to witness the death of his children, more so two children at once. What was my offence against God. I never knew that these boys would not live long, I never knew that they would not live to bury me.”
He, however, denied his involvement in the reprisal attack that led to the death of the killer policeman, stressing: “I knew nothing about the pandemonium that followed the killing of my children. I even went out to caution those irate mobs despite my condition. I did not know any of them; none of them is my family member or friend. They did what they did probably out of emotion considering the level of that police brutality. I made every effort to control them, even the Akinrun of Ikirun joined in cautioning them.”
Injury of officers
The DPO in charge of Ikirun division of the Nigeria Police, Mr. Abiodun Alabi, who is currently on hospital bed at the state Hospital Asubiaro, Osogbo, decried what he called barbaric acts by the youths, saying that some police officers in the town were injured during the crisis.
He said dangerous weapons including guns and charms were used by the irate mob against the police officers and members of their families, adding that he narrowly escaped from the hands of the mob when they descended upon him at his official quarters.
While noting that computer sets, video, television and mobile phones were burnt to ashes, Alabi said: “I am currently responding to treatment. All I can say for now is that I was briefed fully by an officer. The Police officer did not intentionally shoot the boys, it was an accidental discharge, but the thugs at Oke-Afo area of the town where the incident happened took laws into their hands and turned the whole situation into chaos.
“Pandemonium later enveloped the town as they began to burn tyres on major streets of the town. They also went to the two police posts in the town and burnt them down. It was also sad to note that homes of police officers were attacked by the mob. We had thought that we were living with our friends before that day. Only one police officer made a mistake, and many of us, including our family members were made to suffer for the mistake of one person.”
The Akinrun of Ikirun, Oba Rauf Olayiwola Adedeji while expressing displeasure on the ugly incident described the situation as unfortunate.
The monarch stated that the town was a peaceful one but stressed that the police act of brutality led to the unfortunate pandemonium.
The question on the lips of many, however, is: With the gruesome killing of the two Adesina brothers and the subsequent killing of the police officer that killed the promising young brothers, will the people of Ikirun community and the police ever live peacefully again?

Nigerian capital Abuja hit by barracks bomb
Several people have been killed by a bomb blast at a bar near a barracks in Nigeria's capital, Abuja.
Nigeria's president condemned the attack, blaming it on Islamists who claimed responsibility for a recent bombing in the north of the country.
The explosion happened in a market where soldiers and civilians often gather to eat and drink beer.
A police spokesman said four people had died, while military sources have told the BBC 11 people were killed.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, President Goodluck Jonathan called the attacks "evil" and "wicked".
"Basking in their nefarious success in Jos on Christmas Eve, they have once again knifed at the heartstrings of a nation decked out in gaiety, celebrating New Year's Eve," he said.
An Islamic sect known as Boko Haram said it had carried out the attack in Jos, but there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the Abuja bombing.
New year's revellers
State TV initially reported that 30 people were killed. But police spokesman Jimoh Moshood said four people had been killed - three men and one woman.
Witnesses have told the BBC they saw body parts lying on the ground and injured people being carried away after the blast.
"People ran in different directions. There were scores of bodies - dead and wounded. They used army trucks to pack them away," a market regular called Eric was quoted as telling Reuters news agency.
The area was sealed off.
Air Marshal Oluseyi Petiri said a bomb had been placed "where people were relaxing and generally being happy because of the New Year which is approaching".
He urged Nigerians to be vigilant following a recent spate of bomb attacks in a country where they had been almost unknown.
"Do not allow anybody to come and leave a bag, or any kind of object, especially when he is not there," he told state TV.
There have been bomb attacks in the capital and other cities in recent weeks:
¤ On Wednesday, two blasts disrupted a political rally in the southern city of Yenagoa, wounding several people
¤ Bomb attacks in the city of Jos, a flash-point between Nigerian Christians and Muslims, left 80 people dead over Christmas - an Islamist group said it was behind these attacks
¤ In October, at least 12 people were killed in explosions in Abuja as the country celebrated 50 years since independence from the UK - this was blamed on oil militants.
The market is near the Sani Abacha barracks, named after Nigeria's late military dictator, in Asokoro district, home to the presidential palace and said to be the city's most secure area.
Officially renamed the Mogadishu Cantonment, the barracks is still known to many by its old name.
