Nigerian Born Rapper Sets New World Freestyle Record

Rapper Chidera 'Chiddy' Anamega from the Hip-Hop duo, Chiddy Bang
Rapper Chidera ‘Chiddy’ Anamega from the Hip-Hop duo, Chiddy Bang is the current holder of the‘World’s Longest Freestyle Rap’ title. The American-based rapper with Nigerian root last weekend had a rap freestyle running for 9 hours, 18 minutes, and 22 seconds at the MTV organised‘O Music Awards’ to beat the previous record of 9 hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds held by the rapper named M-Eighty. Revealing preparations towards achieving this feat, the rapper popularly known as Chiddy told MTV.com he practices freestyles daily.

“That’s better than a lot of people, if you really think about it; I freestyle once a day for like 30 minutes straight. I never put myself to this maximum test, but it’s very exciting for me, and once this all done, it’ll be like, ‘Wow I didn’t know I could go that long.’” “It’s a marathon, not a race,” Chiddy continued. “It’s all about pacing yourself. I tend to be very, very hype when I rap.

This time, I realise I’m gonna rap for like nine hours, so I’m not gonna come out of the gate hyped. I’m just gonna pace myself and ride that thing out, ride it till the wheels fall off.” The group Chiddy Bang gained recognition after its 2009 released Extended Play set, ‘The Opposite of Adults’ received critical commendations. Chidera acknowledges his Nigerian roots on the opening of the track ‘Sooner Or Later’ which receives sampled elements from the legendary Afrobeat singer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

House of Reps goes on forced break

The House of Representatives embarked on another one-week recess on Wednesday barely 24 hours after its members resumed from their general elections break.

There were two different accounts of what led to the sudden break. While one had it that the recess resulted from the absence of two key principal officers— the Speaker, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, and his Deputy, Alhaji Usman Nafada— the other attributed it to the need to avert a row planned by some aggrieved members.

Under the standing orders and rules of the House, only the two presiding officers (speaker and deputy speaker) can preside over proceedings in the chamber.

The aggrieved lawmakers, led by Mr. Dino Melaye, are protesting the non-payment of their salaries and allowances for 10 months.

It was learnt that Melaye and his colleagues had attempted to accost the Speaker on Tuesday but for the intervention of Nafada and the Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Mr. Ita Enang.

Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden dead - Barack Obama

Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden has been killed by US forces in Pakistan, President Barack Obama has said.

The al-Qaeda leader was killed in a ground operation outside Islamabad based on US intelligence, the first lead for which emerged last August.

Mr Obama said after "a firefight", US forces took possession of his body.

Bin Laden was accused of being behind a number of atrocities, including the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001.

He was top of the US "most wanted" list.

Mr Obama said it was "the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al-Qaeda".

The US has put its embassies around the world on alert, warning Americans of the possibility of al-Qaeda reprisal attacks for Bin Laden's killing.

Crowds gathered outside the White House in Washington DC, chanting "USA, USA" after the news emerged.

Raid details
Bin Laden approved the 9/11 attacks in which nearly 3,000 people died, saying later that the results had exceeded his expectations.

He evaded the forces of the US and its allies for almost a decade, despite a $25m bounty on his head.

His death will be seen as a major blow to al-Qaeda but also raises fears of reprisal attacks, correspondents say.

Mr Obama said he had been briefed last August on a possible lead to Bin Laden's whereabouts.

"It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground," Mr Obama said.

"I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we had located Bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside of Pakistan.

"And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action, and authorised an operation to get Osama Bin Laden and bring him to justice," the president said.

On Sunday a small team of US forces undertook the operation in Abbottabad, north of Islamabad.

After a "firefight" Bin Laden was killed and his body taken by US forces, the president said.

Mr Obama said "no Americans were harmed" in the operation.

Giving more details of the operation, a senior US official said a small US team had conducted the operation in about 40 minutes.

One helicopter was lost due to "technical failure".

Three other men were also killed in the raid, including one of Bin Laden's sons. One woman was killed when she was used as "a shield", the official said.

The size and complexity of the structure in Abbottabad had "shocked" US officials.

It had 4m-6m (12ft-18ft) walls, was eight times larger than other homes in the area and was valued at "several million dollars", though it had no telephone or internet connection.

'Momentous achievement'
Former US President Bill Clinton said in a statement: "This is a profoundly important moment not just for the families of those who lost their lives on 9/11 and in al-Qaeda's other attacks but for people all over the world who want to build a common future of peace, freedom, and cooperation for our children."

Mr Clinton's successor, President George W Bush, described the news as a "momentous achievement".

"The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done," Mr Bush said in a statement.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner says that, to many in the West, Bin Laden became the embodiment of global terrorism, but to others he was a hero, a devout Muslim who fought two world superpowers in the name of jihad.

The son of a wealthy Saudi construction family, Bin Laden grew up in a privileged world. But soon after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan he joined the mujahideen there and fought alongside them with his Arab followers, a group that later formed the nucleus for al-Qaeda.

After declaring war on America in 1998, Bin Laden is widely believed to have been behind the bombings of US embassies in East Africa, a billion-dollar US warship, and the attacks on New York and Washington.

CBN Limits Daily Cash Withdrawals to N150,000

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that effective from June 1, 2012, daily cumulative withdrawals and lodgements in banks by individuals will be limited to a maximum of N150,000.

The apex bank also pegged the daily cumulative withdrawals and lodgements by corporate customers at N1,000,000 effective from the same date.

CBN noted that the policy decision was in view of increasing dominance of cash in the economy with its implication for cost of cash management to the banking industry, security, money laundering, amongst others.

The banking regulatory authority, which disclosed this Thursday in a circular titled: “Industry Policy on Retail Cash Collection and Lodgement,” signed by its Director of Currency Operations Department, Mr Muhammad Nda, warned that individuals and corporate organisations that flout the limits would be charged penalty fees of N100 per thousand and N200 per thousand respectively.

CBN who pointed out that the policy was adopted to reduce high usage of cash and moderate the cost of cash management as well as encourage the use of electronic payment channels, stated that it took the decision in collaboration with the bankers’ committee.

It threatened to suspend any bank, payments scheme, processor, switching company or service provider that contravenes the policy for a minimum of one month, warning that the licence of such institution might be withdrawn if such contravention was repeated. The CBN added: “Contravention of this policy shall attract a fine of five times the amount that the bank waives as a first offender. Subsequently, the bank shall pay ten times the charges waived. Furthermore, third party cheques above N150,000 shall not be eligible for encashment over the counter.

Value for such cheques shall be received through the clearing house.

“If a bank allows third party cheque encashment, it shall be liable to a sanction of 10 per cent of the face value of the cheque or N100, 000 whichever is higher.

Banks will cease cash in transit lodgement services rendered to merchant-customers from June 1, 2012. In this regard, customers could engage the services of the CBN licensed cash-in-transit (CIT) companies to aid cash movement to and from their banks at mutually agreed terms and conditions. Contravention of this policy shall attract a fine of N1 million per specie movement.”

According to the regulator, the arrangement would, in the first instance, be implemented in Lagos State, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Port Harcourt, Kano and Aba.

It added that it would thereafter be extended to other parts of the country at a date to be determined by the Bankers Committee.

“To achieve interoperability of local currency Point of Sale (PoS) transactions, no card scheme, foreign or local, shall operate exclusive acquirer agreement or contract in Nigeria with effect from June 1, 2011. This policy shall apply to both private and public sector transactions. All financial institutions including Deposit Money Banks, Savings and Loans, Mortgage and Microfinance Banks shall comply accordingly,” the CBN explained.

Nigeria win superb Africa Youth Championship final

Nigeria survived a late fightback to beat Cameroon 3-2 after extra-time to win the Africa Youth Championship title in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Terry Envoh scored the winner in the 92nd minute to give the Flying Eagles their sixth continental title.

Two second-half goals from Olanrewaju Kayode and Uche Nwofor to put Nigeria in a comfortable lead.

But strikes from Franck Ohandza and Edgar Salli, with eight minutes left, pushed the match into extra-time.

After 70 minutes of drab fare at Dobsonville Stadium in this vast township south west of Johannesburg, the game sprang to life as Nigeria took a two-goal lead only to surrender it.

Goals from Kayode and Nwofor rocked Cameroon, who won a group match between the countries and kept three clean sheets in four matches en route to the decider.

But the Indomitable Cubs lived up to their nickname by refusing to accept defeat and Franck Ohandza and Edgar Sally scored within four minutes to force 30 additional minutes.

The Flying Eagles regained the lead two minutes into extra time through Terry Envoh, whose first goal of the biennial two-week tournament proved decisive.

After winning four consecutive championships in the 1980s, Nigeria had to wait until 2005 for their fifth success in a competition restricted to under-20 footballers.

Meanwhile, Egypt finished third after defeating Mali 1-0 in the third-place play-off in Johannesburg. Mohamed Aly's 58th minute strike separated the two sides.

Mali were favourites for the game but a second-half revival by the north Africans helped them to seal the win.

The Young Eagles dominated the early exchanges with midfielder Coulibaly Abdoulaye creating opportunities for his strikers.

Mali were made to pay for their profligacy when Aly took advantage of a defensive slip-up to fire low into the far corner.

All the four teams that reached the semi-final will represent Africa at the Under-20 World Cup in Colombia in July.
